On the evening of Wednesday, December 6, an unusual incident took place in Prague’s Hlubočepy district. Placing excessive trust in their navigation system, a driver followed its guidance onto the tram tracks. The peculiar event happened around 18:20 on Hlubočepská Street, resulting in no injuries but causing damage to the vehicle and the separation barrier. Law enforcement promptly arrived at the scene and conducted an alcohol test on the foreign driver, yielding a negative result. As a consequence of the incident, tram services on the street were halted for approximately an hour. Similarly, curious accidents related to navigation are far from unique. Earlier this year, a young female driver, also relying on navigation, followed the instruction to turn, only to find herself on the tram tracks. Likewise, a Polish lorry driver, who failed to notice that the road had been diverted for reconstruction, ended up overturned behind the barriers in a dug-up road due to confusion caused by the navigation instructions. Oh Deer Bakery, founded by Lukáš Vašek in 2017, is set to cease its operations in Prague by mid-December. The decision stems from the burnout experienced by the bakery owner, who delegated production to a third party. This move, however, proved a decline in the quality of the cronuts – doughnuts crafted from croissant dough – and a surge in customer complaints. Regretting the decision made a year ago to outsource production due to personal exhaustion, Lukáš Vasek shared on social media, “I was tired, worn down, burned to the ground, and this seemed like a fine solution. Unfortunately, it fell apart. Autumn this year was the warmest since records began at the weather station at the Clementinum complex in central Prague, according to data released on Tuesday by the Czech Hydro-Meteorological Institute. The average temperature between September and the end of November was 13.6 degrees Celsius. September and October were the warmest seen since records were first made in 1775; November’s temperatures were 1 degree Celsius above the average for the time of year. The second-warmest autumn ever recorded was in 2006, with an average temperature of 13.2 degrees. In 1752 the first regular meteorological measurement was initiated at Klementinum and it has been continuing until now. Thirty-three years of chosen weather characteristic measurements (temperature and air pressure) are unfortunately incomplete because they were often done by estimation. So the year 1775 is considered the beginning of comprehensive succession. “Mannheim clocks” functioned as regular temperature measurements, according to which weather behaviour was noted always at 7 am,7 pm, and 9 pm. The Prague Public Transit Company (DPP) has announced a tender worth CZK 220 million for the revamp of metro toilets. The company plans to modernize 17 toilets over the next four years. This initiative builds on ongoing efforts since 2014, with 24 out of 64 toilets already reconstructed, according to spokesperson Aneta Řehková. In the Prague metro network, there are 17 toilets along Line A, 27 along Line B, and 20 along Line C. Řehková mentioned that the initial focus was on three toilets at the Můstek metro station, followed by renovations at 12 other Line B stations, five on Line A, and four on Line C. The forthcoming phase of renovations, outlined in the tender, will kick off at the Háje, Roztyly, Pražského povstání, Florenc, and Černý Most stations. Řehková noted, “In the following years, around 12 more toilets will be renovated, along with some reconstructed in conjunction with the station or as part of development projects.” Despite a previous tender for the toilet operator, the selection process is still ongoing. Řehková confirmed, “We are now preparing a new tender for the operator of public toilets in the metro.”
Prague City is set to witness the inauguration of its first-ever ice rink at Wenceslas Square. Opening on Tuesday, December 5, and running until February 18, 2024, the ice rink will grace the lower expanse of the square. Despite its modest size, measuring 30×12 meters, the venue will offer not just skating but also the convenience of on-site skate rentals and a fast-food tent. Admission to the rink comes at a cost, with prices that might be considered relatively high compared to other facilities. A two-hour glide for adults will cost CZK 200, while children can join the rink for CZK 100. Additionally, renting skates for two hours will set you back another CZK 150. Christmas as a holiday of consumerism: the Goethe-Institut wants to convince the Czech and international public that it doesn’t have to be this way. On Saturday 9 December, the institute will offer a series of creative workshops for children and adults with a Christmas and ecological theme. Entrance is free. “We have a pile of old wallpaper, wrapping paper, unwanted posters, newspapers, magazines, branches from our beautiful Christmas tree and dozens of other items that would be easy to throw away. We want to save it all and transform it into original Christmas gifts, notebooks or stationery,” comments Veronika Svítil from the Goethe-Institut. All this is free of course,” adds Svítil. The Salvation Army’s annual collection in aid of the needy, primarily single parents, elderly citizens and homeless people, starts on December 4. How can you contribute? People can contribute to the cause by donating money to the organisation’s volunteers in the streets of Prague, Brno, Ostrava and other cities, as well as online. The collection will run until December 22. You can donate money through the Darujme.cz portal, by transferring it to an account, or physically on the streets of selected cities. The individuals collecting the money are referred to as “bell ringers”. You can contribute by placing your donation into the red kettle carried by the bell ringers. Who does the collection help? The funds will support initiatives for children, youth, families, and the elderly. For children, donations will primarily go towards organizing camps, clubs, or music and dance groups.
