Electric Cars Will No Longer be Able to Park in Prague for Free
The Czech Christmas Mass also commonly known as “Rybovka”, is an inherent part of the pre-Christmas season. The church composition written in Czech by Jakub Jan Ryba retells the story of the announcement of Christ’s birth and the arrival of the shepherds to the manger. The mass is set in the Czech environment and, thanks to its joyful and fresh atmosphere, it has enjoyed popularity among children and adults for over two hundred years. The Rybovka na Hlaváku will once again take place at Prague’s main railway station (Hlavní nádraží) after a three-year hiatus caused by the coronavirus. Dozens of musicians and singers will perform Česká mše vánoční (Czech Christmas Mass) on Friday 23 December. This will be the twentieth time the event has taken place. The improvised orchestra, consisting of musicians who have volunteered to take part in the Facebook event, will be conducted by the well-known Czech conductor Lukáš Prchal. The Old Prague Club opposes the proposal to transform the Main Railway Station, arguing against the demolition of a significant portion of the new concourse. The club contends that the station is a valuable structure, describing it as “one of the finest post-war buildings not only in Prague but in the entire Czech Republic,” as stated in its official release. The proposed design, selected through an architectural competition by the Railway Administration (SŽ), Prague, and the Prague Transport Company, suggests the removal of the front section of the hall, replacing it with an open space covered with a wooden structure. In its statement, the club emphasizes the check-in hall as an exceptional work by the architectural team of Jan Bočan, Josef Danda, Zdeněk Rothbauer, and Jan and Alena Šrámek. With the temperatures dropping and winter approaching, public ice rinks are gradually opening around Prague for people to enjoy the Advent season. For example, a shopping center’s roof can be an atypical place for ice skating. “Every year, we aim to bring something original to visitors so they can experience skating in new, unusual locations. That’s why we opened an ice rink on the roof of the Nový Smíchov Shopping Centre or inside the fountain in Prague’s Střížkov district. This is unique in the whole country; you won’t find any other round ice rink like this in the Czech Republic,” says Vít Bouše, the organizer of the Prague Ice Skating Rink project. Other ice rinks around Prague also offer refreshments and accompanying programs for children and adults, creating a pleasant Christmas atmosphere. A new light installation park, named “Karlovo království,” has recently opened on Karlovo náměstí, accessible for free. This collaborative project was organized by the Prague-2 municipal district and the municipal company responsible for the Management of Technical Communications in Prague. The park welcomes visitors every day until January 6, 2024. Prague City Hall has prohibited a pro-Palestinian demonstration scheduled for Tuesday, 5 December, in front of the Interior Ministry building. The ban was imposed due to the demonstration’s association with an anti-Israel slogan, “From the River to the Sea, Palestine Will Be Free.” The Ministry of the Interior has previously warned that this slogan may constitute a criminal offense. In the official statement, the municipality asserted that the slogan implies the destruction of Israel. Activists, in response, plan to take legal action against the municipality for prohibiting the protest. The municipality states that the slogan is closely linked to the Palestinian radical movement Hamas, and argue that historically, the slogan is associated with a call for the destruction of the State of Israel and the removal of part of its population. Activists, however, dispute the characterization of the slogan, insisting that it does not advocate violence. The Prague Castle Administration will launch a competition for new leases of houses in Prague’s renowned Golden Lane (Zlatá ulička). It wants to revive traditional crafts in the picturesque houses lining the historic street. There are sixteen small houses in the Golden Lane, each with a different-coloured facade, the smallest with a floor area of just fourteen square meters. Over the centuries, the lane has undergone a number of reconstructions. The houses were inhabited until the Second World War. The one-time dwellings for the castle’s grooms and servants have become a major tourist attraction. From March onwards, the current vendors will likely be replaced by new ones under different conditions. Almost all the houses will see their leases expire at the end of the year. “It’s not just a tourist issue. We will emphasize crafts or traditional Czech products,” says Vladimír Sonntag, director of the Prague Castle Administration. The Advent Sundays in Prague will see life-size angel puppets and the city will flare with the islands of live art. The event will be part of the winter edition of the street theatre festival Za dveřmi. A total of seven processions are planned. – 1 December (Friday) – 2 December (Saturday) – 9 December (Saturday) – 10 December (Sunday) – 16 December (Saturday) – 17 December (Sunday) – 23 December (Saturday) Different performers and a seven-meter puppet of an angel will wander through the center of Prague. “The Advent time in the capital will be spiced up with some special performances and installations that will take place at various venues,” says Jakub Vedral, the producer, and invites the viewers to the first winter festival of street theatre. All processions will start from Mariánské Square at approximately 17:00. Passers-by will be able to meet the “angels” and have their picture taken with them until late in the evening.
