Yes, you read that title right – even the time is better in Prague than most other cities in Europe. As opposed to the various time zones in use across the world, solar time is the old-fashioned measurement of time-based on the position of the sun in the sky, employed for use in sundials and other sun-based measurements. For instance: Poland and Spain, along with most other countries in Europe, both use Central European Time. That means that at 6:00 in the morning, the sun may be beaming in eastern Poland while it’s still pitch black in western Spain. Central European Time covers such a wide zone that the perceptible difference in solar time between two areas in CET can be up to three hours. But prime solar time accuracy – where CET best matches real, measurable solar time, runs right through the center of Europe. That covers most of the Czech Republic, western Poland, Eastern Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, southern Italy, and parts of Sweden. On Thursday, 20 July, an open-air summer cinema will open on Mariánské náměstí in the heart of Prague. The twist? It’s a ‘silent cinema.’ A ‘silent cinema’ is a similar concept to a ‘silent disco’ in that the audio for the event is not pumped through speakers but through headphones to each person who attends. This means that the screen will not generate lots of noise into the night, and is also a fun twist for those who wish to attend. The cinema will work till the beginning of September. The first movie is going to be screened at 21:00. Entrance is free, but you can not book a seat in advance. The schedule of screenings is as follows: – 20, 21 and 22 July – 17, 18 and 19 August – 31 August, 1 and 2 September. The audience will be shown mainly Czech and European films from different years. Local business owners and the tourist office predict this summer to be exceptional in terms of the number of visitors. Summer is in full swing, and more and more tourists are coming to the city. The number of tourists has reached 80 percent of the pre-pandemic level, says Barbora Scherf, spokeswoman for Prague City Tourism. Tourists from Asian countries have also returned. Almost six million tourists came to Prague in 2022, and this year, it is likely that even more visitors will arrive in the city with cobblestone streets. The tourists are catching up. Michal Dziendziura confirms what the statistics show. He works as a tour guide in Prague and is the owner of Prague Free Tour Company. As early as September, Popeyes, an American chain of fast food restaurants selling fried chicken, will open its first restaurant in the Czech Republic. By the end of the year, two more branches will be opened – in addition to the first one in the center of Prague, one will be added in the center of Brno, and another location will open just outside Prague. This will create strong competition for the three biggest chains in the Czech Republic – KFC, McDonald’s, and Burger King. The first Czech customers will welcome Popeyes with a location in Wenceslas Square, but the exact address is still being kept secret by the company. The Prague City Technology Company (THMP) has been installing new tram stop shelters throughout Prague over the past few months. Since the project’s commencement in 2021, numerous old tram stop shelters have been replaced. However, some of these newly installed shelters are already being… dismantled. According to THMP, the reason for this is “digitization”. Czech daily iDnes reported that JCDecaux owned the tram stop shelters until mid-2021. Afterward, the city of Prague obtained them, and THMP initiated their modernization in December 2021 by placing the first redesigned tram stop shelter in Velká Ohrada. The shelters’ shape was designed by studio Olgoj Chorchoj. They are made of dark aluminum and feature a screen that displays the stop’s name, current time, and departure information. The primary purpose of these shelters is to standardize the appearance of Prague’s tram stops and provide easier navigation for passengers. The initial design also includes electrical connections for passengers to charge their phones. The center’s primary focus is to assist businesses in enhancing the security and efficiency of their employees’ work with AI. Companies across various sectors, including marketing, human resources, and finance, utilize AI services alongside their IT needs. However, the intention is not to replace human labor with AI. The biggest metropolitan music event of 2024 will take place at the Prague Exhibition Grounds from 20 to 22 June. The legendary band Depeche Mode has announced today that they will be extending their Memento Mori Tour into 2024. After successful concerts in stadiums and arenas worldwide this summer and autumn, fans can now look forward to 29 more shows in Europe. The band will come to Prague one more time on 22 and 24 February next year. The Memento Mori Tour has already been described by Rolling Stone magazine as “a breathtaking celebration of life and music,” offering audiences a raw and emotional experience. There will be no shortage of shared scooters in Prague and Brno. In the first half of July, a new Czech company, Antees, will enter Prague and Brno, operating shared electric scooters. A large part of the fleet consists of scooters from BeRider, active in Prague until the end of May. In Prague, the company will start with 100 scooters at first and increase the number to 200 during the summer. In Brno, 100 scooters will start operating by the end of July. “We are deeply convinced that shared mobility makes sense, especially in larger cities. The Prague City Council is currently working on developing new regulations for the rental of municipal flats. According to Deputy Mayor for Housing, Alexandra Udženija (ODS), the goal is to improve the assessment of applicants. The draft rules, which have recently been discussed by the council’s housing committee, have faced criticism from the Platform for Social Housing in an open letter. The opposition party, Prague Together (Praha sobě), is also against the proposed regulations.
