The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute has extended the previously announced severe heat warning. Now it is valid until late evening (until 21:00) on Monday, July 10. Forecasters expect the air in the country to warm above 31°C on Monday, while in the South Moravian region the temperature will reach 34°C. Doctors recommend residents to drink plenty of fluids (without sugar and caffeine), avoid alcohol and fatty foods, not to spend a long time outdoors, limit physical activity, choose clothing made of light natural materials. Older people and children are particularly at risk. Saturday broke temperature records for July 8 at 9 of the 160 monitoring stations around the country. The highest temperature for that day was registered in Plzen where it reached 34 degrees Celsius. In view of the dry and extremely hot weather there is a ban on lighting fires outdoors and mounted police are patrolling the Bohemian Switzerland National Park which was ravaged by a devastating fire last year.

The piggery, a giant industrial operation, stood on the remnants of the Nazi-era Roma concentration camp near Lety, about 80 kilometers south of Prague, and was built in the early 1970s after the Communist regime rejected a proposal to build a Romani Holocaust memorial there. Tourism in the Czech Republic is highly valued by its residents, especially those living in tourist-exposed areas, who recognise even better the benefits of this sector for the country than the rest of the population. According to a survey by the Institute of Tourism of the Czech Tourism Office, CzechTourism, thee overall rate for the so-called irritation index was 2.02 for tourism-exposed areas and 1.89 for the entire country, indicating a relatively low level of concern about tourism. Notably, the irritation index is even lower when considering the entire Czech Republic. This suggests that Czechs are aware of tourism’s positive impacts and advantages, warmly embracing the presence of travellers. Czech police said Tuesday that they have broken up an international ring suspected of smuggling migrants from Turkey to western Europe. A total of 14 suspects – 13 foreigners whose countries of origin were not specified and a Czech citizens – have been arrested in raids across the country in recent days, police said. The suspects allegedly organized a transport of at least 1,000 illegal migrants since 2021, earning at least 1 million euros. The smugglers face up to 16 years in prison if tried and convicted. The migrants have been using the Czech Republic as a transit route on their way to the West, officials said, and mostly do not apply for asylum in Czechia, as the country is also known. In February, the Czech government lifted controls, which were renewed at the country’s border with Slovakia in September amid a new wave of migration, mostly from Syria.
The European Commission has announced the inauguration and opening of the renovated railway service in South Moravia calling it a significant development for the region of Czechia that was made through the Cohesion Policy. In a statement issued on June 22, the same authority stated that adding 37 new electric units to the railway line would undoubtedly positively impact the congestion issues during peak hours. By introducing these new units, the capacity of the South-Moravian railway will be enhanced, allowing for a smoother and more efficient transportation experience for the about 22 million passengers who rely on this railway each year. “The new railway units will provide efficient rail services and contribute to making the European Green Deal a reality. I am happy that this project is being inaugurated today and will now concretely improve the life of Czech citizens on South Moravia,” the Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, Elisa Ferreira, said on Friday. Last year, online drug trafficking recorded a significant increase, according to the annual report of the Czech National Drug Control Centre (NPC) published today. Traffickers use not only hidden websites but mainly social networks to send banned substances to consumers. Payment is often made by means of cryptocurrencies. In particular, the sale of drugs via the social network Telegram has significantly increased. The Czech government agreed to give the green light to ratify the Istanbul Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence on Wednesday, sending the document to the Chamber of Deputies for a decision. The Czech Republic is among a minority of six EU countries, including Bulgaria, Slovakia, Hungary, Latvia and Lithuania, that have not yet ratified the document. The idea of a lower VAT rate on products made from recycled materials, which could be applied at the EU level, will be presented by Czech Environment Minister Petr Hladík at the meeting of EU environment ministers on Tuesday. Currently, EU law does not allow member states to reduce VAT on products made from recycled materials. However, the Czech Republic wants to introduce a reduced 12% VAT on these products as a part of a tax package aiming to consolidate public finances. The lower rate must be allowed at the EU level for such a move. According to the minister, the reduced VAT should be applied to all plastic products made from recycled materials, including toys, hygiene tools, daily necessities, snow rakes, flower pots, and even building materials. “These are also materials that today end up either in landfills or incinerators that we can recycle for use in the municipal sector, such as benches or urban furniture,” Hladík told Czech media on Monday.
