The luxury villa, owned by investor and mathematician Karel Janeček, is located in Prague’s Smichov district. According to the real estate agent Jan Bareš of NRG International Realty it boasts six bedrooms, four bathrooms, two studies, a pool, a hot tub, a wine cellar, a home theatre, and a rooftop terrace with stunning views of the city. The Czech opposition ANO party of former Prime Minister Andrej Babiš would win the Czech general election with 33.5% of the vote if elections were held now, according to a new opinion poll. The current Kantar election model for Czech Television also shows that the Pirates (Greens/EFA), STAN and TOP 09 (EPP) would still make it into the Czech Chamber of Deputies. Czechs’ support for the temporary stay of Ukrainian refugees in the Czech Republic has declined in recent months, according to research by the STEM agency. 51% of respondents considered it right for the Czech Republic to continue giving refuge to Ukrainians who fled the Russian invasion, 5% less than in June. The number of people who think the Ukrainian refugees are an asset to the Czech Republic has not changed. As in the summer, around a quarter of citizens hold this view, and similarly, those thinking that Ukrainian refugees should be given the opportunity to stay in the Czech Republic after the end of the war remain at two-fifths. Some 54% of respondents said their attitudes towards Ukrainian refugees have remained basically unchanged since the start of the war in February 2022. This innovation aims to enable individuals to verify their identity through a mobile app on their smartphones, replacing the conventional plastic identification card. It allows people to selectively share personal data during verification processes, enhancing both privacy and security. The scheduled launch of this project is slated for early next year, though it will not be valid for international use. The so-called ‘máničky’ represented the spirit of freedom and resistance to the authoritarian regime “Better late than never”, some might say upon learning that the Czech Supreme Court has overturned a verdict from 1966, which sentenced 14 young men for protesting the forced cutting of their hair by the police. Back in the 1960s Czechoslovakia was part of the Communist-ruled Eastern bloc of Europe, which resulted in a serious curtailment of personal, collective and economic freedoms for the people living there. Government control extended even into things like fashion and grooming. Long hair worn by men was seen as a decadent influence by the West and a political statement of resistance and opposition. In a sense, it was. That decade was a cultural transformation milestone in many countries and the influence of new ideas, music and youth culture permeated even through the Iron Curtain. Following the successful launch of the Brussels – Amsterdam – Berlin night train in May 2023, European Sleeper will extend this route to Dresden and Prague from 25 March 2024. The train will then connect four European capitals and even Paris and London are well connected with a single transfer in Brussels. On the way through Saxon Switzerland and the Elbe Valley, the train stops in both Germany and the Czech Republic: in Bad Schandau, Décin and Usti nad Labem. A magnitude-5.0 earthquake occurred in eastern Slovakia at about 20:23 Oct. 9. The epicenter was about 15 km south-southeast of Stropkov. The tremor struck at the earth’s surface with no appreciable depth. Moderate-to-strong shaking was reported across eastern Slovakia, with weak-to-moderate shaking reported further away from the epicenter in southeastern Poland, northeastern Hungary, northwestern Romania, and southwestern Ukraine. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake; however, some light damage is possible in areas near the epicenter. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. In Vranov nad Topľou, Humenné, Snina, Prešov, Michalovce, and Bardejov, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Trebišov, and Košice. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Aftershocks are likely over the coming days. Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage. Minor disruptions could occur during shutdowns, but service will likely resume quickly if no damage is found. Utility outages are possible where shaking occurred.
The heating season has officially started in Prague as of yesterday, Monday, October 9. Most people in Prague have started to get heat in their flats, now that fall temperatures are taking over. The heating season began due to the drop in average daily temperatures and the chilly weather forecast for the following days. By law, the heating season spans from the start of September through the end of May. During this period, heating may be subject to restrictions or interruptions if the average daily outdoor temperature in a given location remains above 13 degrees Celsius for at least two consecutive days. Israel has the right to defend itself against Hamas attacks, according to various Czech politicians, with some calling for an end to EU funding for Palestine. “The rocket attacks and the infiltration of Hamas commandos into Israel will block any efforts for a peaceful solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict for a long time.
