A resident of Prague 14 district found himself in a peculiar situation on Thursday, unable to leave his home due to an unexpected obstacle: a ram blocking his doorway. The man contacted authorities after the ram with imposing horns refused to move, stationed itself in front of the resident’s gate, steadfastly refusing to yield. “In the afternoon, a sturdy-hoofed animal stood in front of his gate and refused to budge. As time passed, it became increasingly clear that the individual wasn’t selling pots, preaching the word of God, or fighting for the climate. To avoid a deadlock, the caller decided to report the matter to police,” said police spokesperson Irena Seifertová. Officers on the scene quickly assessed the situation and contacted the animal control service. Using specialized techniques, the animal control team successfully captured the ram and transported it unharmed to the Troja animal shelter.

The reconstruction of the moving sculpture depicting the head of famous author Franz Kafka, located by the Quadrio shopping centre, has been successfully completed. The city has announced that it will put it back with an official re-unveiling to take place on 29 February at 7 PM at Piazza Quadrio shopping centre. There will be a spectral light show and original music. It took a total of five months to repair David Černý’s work. “Each of the 42 rotating panels the sculpture is comprised of underwent necessary maintenance work. Our technicians replaced the rotating mechanism of each panel individually. It is now equipped with a more modern technical solution that will ensure a longer service life and easier maintenance,” shared Alex Černý, executive director of DEUS Automation, which carried out the repair. Prague residents and visitors can once again look forward to the 15-minute rotation of the statue, which takes place once every hour. “We are very pleased that this demanding repair was successful and that the bust is going back to where it belongs, and in even better shape,” said František Šlapák, asset manager at CPI Property Group. Plans are progressing for a new development on the site of the former Transgas building in Prague’s Vinohrady district. The brutalist building, designed by architect Václav Aulický, was demolished in 2020. Developers expect to receive a zoning permit by the end of 2024, with construction potentially starting in the summer of 2025. The project, a collaboration between Penta and PSN, is estimated to cost around CZK 2 billion and could be completed by mid-2027. “Over the past six months, the site has been prepared and utilities have been relocated,” said spokesperson Martin Lánský. However, a new construction law introduced in July 2023 could potentially impact timelines. The winning design for the new development, by Jakub Cigler Architects, features a mix of apartments, offices, and retail space. The complex will be similar to the original Transgas building in form, a semi-closed block with a central open space. Prague hoteliers are celebrating record guest numbers during the traditionally slow winter months. Occupancy rates reaching 90% paint a clear picture: Prague is shedding its seasonal skin, attracting tourists year-round. This positive development is echoed in a press release by Czech Inn Hotels, citing data from consulting firm STR for January. The report reveals a surge in winter tourism, effectively erasing the city’s usual seasonality. January sales soared by nearly 24% year-on-year, placing the Czech Republic fourth in Europe behind Turkey, Malta, and Russia (Germany ranked fifth). “Thankfully, the trend in occupancy and costs is optimistic,” says Jaroslav Svoboda, owner of Czech Inn Hotels. “However, let’s not get carried away; we’re still far from 2019 pre-pandemic levels.” This “happy surprise,” as Svoboda calls it, has disrupted the traditional off-season. January typically sees a significant drop in occupancy, but this year, the decrease compared to other months was much smaller. On February 25, 1969, Jan Zajíc, an 18-year-old student from Šumperk set himself on fire to protest against growing public apathy to the Soviet led-invasion in 1968. Zajíc, who felt that further protest actions were needed, committed the act on the 21st anniversary of the communist putsch in 1948. He had several letters with him urging the people to fight against the Soviet military occupation of Czechoslovakia. He left for Prague on the morning of 25 February 1969. Even though three of his classmates were traveling with him for different reasons and the police knew about his intention, no one succeeded in preventing Zajíc from committing suicide. At about 1:30 p.m., he doused himself with petrol and set himself on fire in house number 39 on Wenceslas Square in Prague. The Czech Republic will commemorate two years since the start of the war in Ukraine with meetings, marches, debates and concerts over the weekend. The Day for Ukraine will include a rally on Saturday in Prague’s Staroměstské Náměstí attended by President Petr Pavel, with a video message from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
