Inspectors of Prague’s transport company (DPP) imposed 255,115 fines for undeclared riding in 2022, up 16% year over year. They collected CZK 213.7 million in fines, up almost 41% year over year. People paid most of the fines within 30 days of their imposition. Last year, DPP vehicles traveled some 181.2 million kilometers and carried almost 892 million passengers, both up year over year. “As a result of our improved efficiency, we have collected 52% more surcharges at the point of inspection than in 2021, removing the need for a significant number of claims to be pursued further through the courts. With this, passengers will pay 76% of our surcharges within 30 days of their imposition,” the document says. The number of inspections by auditors increased by 15,000 year over year to more than a quarter of a million. On the other hand, the number of debts recovered in foreclosure has gone down as the DPP joined the so-called grace summer that allowed people with foreclosures to get rid of debts with public institutions. If they repaid the original amount owed and a fee of 908 crowns to the bailiff, the penalties, interest and other payments were forgiven and the...
The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute has extended the previously announced severe heat warning. Now it is valid until late evening (until 21:00) on Monday, July 10. Forecasters expect the air in the country to warm above 31°C on Monday, while in the South Moravian region the temperature will reach 34°C. Doctors recommend residents to drink plenty of fluids (without sugar and caffeine), avoid alcohol and fatty foods, not to spend a long time outdoors, limit physical activity, choose clothing made of light natural materials. Older people and children are particularly at risk. Saturday broke temperature records for July 8 at 9 of the 160 monitoring stations around the country. The highest temperature for that day was registered in Plzen where it reached 34 degrees Celsius. In view of the dry and extremely hot weather there is a ban on lighting fires outdoors and mounted police are patrolling the Bohemian Switzerland National Park which was ravaged by a devastating fire last year.
A recent study conducted in the Czech Republic has shed light on intriguing patterns in the sexual preferences of men and women. The research findings demonstrate that a considerable proportion of men, approximately 31%, possess extraordinary or unconventional sexual preferences. Similarly, the study reveals that approximately 14% of women also exhibit such preferences, albeit to a lesser extent. The study’s outcomes illuminate the complexity and diversity within human sexuality. The findings provide valuable insights into the unique desires and preferences individuals may possess, underscoring the importance of acknowledging and respecting the varied nature of human sexual expression. Kateřina Klapilova, the head of the NUDZ Sexual Health and Intervention Center, has defined “paraphilia” as individuals with unconventional sexual preferences that may involve non-consensual or violent elements. While the causes of paraphilias are not fully understood, experts believe that some individuals may have an inherent inclination towards these preferences. Data from NUDZ reveals that a small percentage of the Czech population experiences pedophilia or hebephilia, while others have preferences for restraining their partner or engaging in pathological sexual aggression. Paraphilias can also manifest as exhibitionism or sexual sadism and can affect both men and women. Many individuals with paraphilias do not engage...
Prime Minister Petr Fiala tweeted on July 7 that Czechia would send Ukraine additional attack helicopters and “hundreds of thousands” rounds of large-caliber ammunition “in the coming months.” Czechia will also help Ukraine to train its pilots, including on F-16 fighter jets, said Fiala. The country will deliver flight simulators to enable Ukraine to conduct the training on its soil, not just in Western countries. The announcement comes a day after President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Prague to meet with Czech President Petr Pavel, PM Fiala, and other top officials. Their talks have reportedly focused on defense assistance to Ukraine, the unfolding situation at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, the Ukrainian peace formula, and the upcoming NATO summit, among other topics. Before Czechia, Zelensky visited Bulgaria, and his next stop will be Istanbul, Turkey. Ahead of the Vilnius summit, Kyiv is actively seeking additional support for Ukraine’s NATO membership bid. Ukraine hopes to receive a “clear signal” from allies regarding its membership prospects at the event, set to take place on July 11-12. According to PM Fiala, Czechia has supplied Ukraine with 676 pieces of heavy equipment and over 4 million ammunition rounds since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion. For 2023, Prague has reportedly committed...
The Czech Republic witnessed a decrease in consumer price inflation in June, marking a significant milestone as inflation fell below 10% for the first time since January 2022. According to analysts from ČTK, this decline can be attributed to a comparison with last year’s figures and the influence of a strong koruna, along with reduced demand. In May, inflation was recorded at 11.1%. The Czech Statistical Office (CZSO) is scheduled to release the inflation data for June later this week. Experts from Raiffeisenbank estimate that the annual inflation rate for June will be approximately 9.7%. They point out that falling fuel prices have played a significant role in the disinflationary process, as they have dropped by more than 20% compared to the previous year. This decline is primarily due to the high base effect from last year, when fuel prices reached record highs during the summer. The analysts also anticipate a decrease in regulated prices, influenced by lower electricity and gas prices in the market, as well as government regulations. However, food prices continue to contribute to sustained high inflation. Vít Hradil, Chief Economist at Cyrrus, suggests a possible slight increase in the food sector compared to May, and with...

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy made his way to Prague last night to engage in discussions with President Petr Pavel. During their meeting, Zelenskiy expressed his gratitude to Pavel for the Czech Republic’s assistance to Ukraine. Additionally, he highlighted the detrimental effects of Russian propaganda, which he believes is also impacting the Czech Republic. Zelenskiy commended the Czech Republic for its visible efforts in supporting the freedom of the Ukrainian people. He emphasized that it would be ideal for Ukraine to receive an invitation to join NATO, asserting that the current moment is opportune for unity, despite the challenges of aligning all alliance members on the same stance. He expressed his appreciation for the warm welcome in the Czech Republic, acknowledging their involvement in Ukraine’s defense, politics, and various other endeavors. He recognized the Czech Republic’s significance in terms of military aid, arms supplies, support for sanctions against Russia, and backing Ukraine’s accession to the EU and NATO. Furthermore, Zelenskiy lauded the Czech Republic’s acceptance of hundreds of thousands of refugees and shared his aspiration for a future where all people can feel secure and Ukrainians can return to their homeland. Regarding the upcoming NATO summit in Vilnius, he viewed an...
The Prague Pride festival for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer (LGBT+) people will take place this year from 7 to 13 August at several locations in Prague. It will offer over 150 events, including a parade that will march from Wenceslas Square to Letná on Saturday August 12th. The theme of the 13th edition is traditions and their importance for the functioning of society, with the motto “More traditional than you think,” says Eliška Černá on behalf of the event organizers. “We perceive traditions as natural, but that’s only because they have been handed down over several generations. In fact, they are invented by people, and for a specific purpose. Therefore, traditions need to be revised over time and it needs to be decided whether they still serve their original purpose or whether they are just a relic of the times,” said festival director Kamila Fröhlichová. People do not usually associate traditions with queer themes, but the organizers say the opposite is true. People of other sexual orientations have always been around and are therefore a more traditional part of society than it might seem at first glance, said Tereza Košt’álková of the creative agency VMLY&R, which prepared the Pride campaign. The festival’s community events will take place on Střelecký...
Starting July 1, the railjet Vindobona and EuroCity Metropolitan/Hungaria/Slovenská strela trains will have reduced travel times between Prague and Brno. This improvement will also make travel to Vienna, Bratislava, and Budapest faster. The EC Hungaria train will once again travel to the center of Prague, and the direct railjet Vindobona Graz – Wien – Brno – Prague – Dresden – Berlin connection will be restored. “The completion of major repairs on Corridor 1 will allow the return of railjet and EuroCity trains on the line via Česká Třebová starting July 1. This will provide a better connection between Prague, Pardubice, and Brno. Travel to our neighboring cities Vienna, Bratislava, and Budapest will also be faster,” says says Jiří Ješeta, member of the Board of Directors of ČD and Deputy Director General for Passenger Transport. “Trains are once again becoming an appealing alternative to individual motoring on these routes, not only because of the quality and range of services but also due to reduced travel time. The journey from Prague to Brno will now take 2 hours and 35 minutes, with a 2-minute reduction in the opposite direction,” adds Ješeta. The reduced travel time will increase the overall travel speed (including...

The piggery, a giant industrial operation, stood on the remnants of the Nazi-era Roma concentration camp near Lety, about 80 kilometers south of Prague, and was built in the early 1970s after the Communist regime rejected a proposal to build a Romani Holocaust memorial there. It took 50 years for the country to recognize the farm was a disgrace to the memory of those held in the camp and to flatten it. The demolition started last summer and is now nearly finished – with a memorial to be opened on the site next year. But to many Roma people, the saga remains a symbol of the racism, discrimination and prejudice they still face on daily basis. They believe the farm was allowed to be built because the prisoners were Roma, a group that remains the most marginalized community in the Czech Republic. The Lety camp was one of two “Gypsy camps” operating in the German-occupied Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia during World War Two. Roughly 1,300 Czech and Moravian Roma and Sinti men, women and children were held there from August 1942 to August 1943, according to historical records. Sinti people are a specific subgroup of Roma people who came...
